NYT Attempts To Treat Jessica Simpson With Cultural Overtones
We're all for high-brow publications like the New York Times taking on low-brow subjects like Jessica Simpson. It makes us feel a little less guilty for poring over Star each week.

But when dealing with such a trashtastic personality as Ms. Simpson and her film adaptation The Dukes of Hazzard, it's wise to be up front with the vanilla you've got on your plate — not pretend like there's something valuable in the mix, thus requiring big words.

That yes came in the form of "These Boots Are Made for Walkin' " (Columbia), a jumbled-up cover of the old Nancy Sinatra hit. The singer is Ms. Simpson, who delivers many of the rewritten lyrics in the heavy-breathing style usually associated with Ms. Spears. She is joined by Mr. Nelson, who sounds as if he's amused by his garish surroundings. The song gets a staccato dancehall-reggae beat, interspersed with snippets of guitar and harmonica, with an aim toward pleasing both the country and dance-pop constituencies.
Garish surroundings? Staccato dancehall-reggae? Interspersed? snippets? Constituencies?

Come on, Kelefa Sanneh. We know you're struggling to please your editors, but just call it like it is: An excuse for Jessica Simpson to prance around in a bikini for the music video.
