Trumps Jessica Simpson In The 2005 Maxim Hot 100 |
Hollywood, CA - As a
measurement of the culture's collective male gaze,
the Maxim Magazine Hot 100 is a carefully watched
media monster. Actresses and female celebrities with
varied complexities of stardom and sexuality are
ranked in what is meant to be a regular guy's eye
view of 'hotness.'
Like many attempted snapshots of the culture, the
Maxim Hot 100 is part subjective Rorschach Test,
part mathematic Rosetta Stone and part emperor's new
clothes. The purposes and ultimately arbitrary
aspects of the decision-making aside, the list is
good for a laugh and a bit of competition.
From last year to this, "Desperate Housewives" Eva
Longoria made a quantum leap from 91 to 1, knocking
'real' newlywed Jessica Simpson right on her humble
daisy dukes, a fall for Simpson from number 1 to
number 8.
Eight may very well be a cursed number. In 2004,
Paris Hilton had sex, said the "n" word and walked
about every red carpet she could find. She reached
number 8 for all her trouble and now she has dropped
to 20. Ouch! Careful with those strip teases, girls,
that Maxim Hot 100 List is one slippery pole.
Katie Holmes is a smart, natural beauty and can
actually act. She debuted at number 22 this year.
Sadly, this does not indicate that the glorification
of stupidity is abating or that it is even
recognized as damaging to female honor and liberty.
Star vehicles like Jessica Simspon's "Dukes of
Hazzard" and Paris Hilton's "House of Wax" are in
current or near release. No, it probably has more to
do with Holmes 'dating' Tom Cruise. That, like the
list, depends on your suspension of disbelief.
