Prosecuting
criminals has taken a back seat to another mystery
in the Westchester District Attorney's Office: Who's
that in the picture with Assistant DA Tom Kenniff in
Iraq?
It's actress and singer Jessica Simpson, that's who.
The mystery arose because Kenniff, a Massapequa
native, is a lot better known in the DA's office
than Simpson. "We're all fans of Tom," explained DA
Jeanine Pirro.
Friends of Capt. Kenniff, who's serving with a Judge
Advocate General infantry unit near Tikrit — Saddam
Hussein's old hometown — say they're not surprised
he'd manage to be photographed with Simpson when she
visited the troops recently.
"He's a babe magnet," said cousin Sean Kenniff, a
doctor and Miami TV personality who was a contestant
on CBS's original "Survivor."
Capt. Kenniff told The Post in an e-mail that
Simpson and her husband, Nick Lachey, stopped at his
base for a brief visit on Sunday — but a sandstorm
prevented their helicopters from leaving.
"Jessica and Nick were taken by SUVs to a housing
area on the base where they wound up having to stay
the night until the storm cleared out," Kenniff
wrote.
Kenniff, 29, and single, grew up in Massapequa and
now lives in Manhattan. He's serving with the 42nd
Infantry Division of the New York Army National
Guard, doing legal work in the JAG Corps. Much of
his job involves details of Iraq's new constitution,
said Sean Kenniff.
"A lot of people are over there because of
circumstance. Tom is over there by pure drive," Sean
Kenniff said.
"Everything in his fabric is patriotic. He's over
there for all the right reasons."
Kenniff is a graduate of the University of Rochester
and Hofstra law school. He has three brothers who
all live on Long Island, and a 4-year-old daughter,
his cousin said.
Getting himself in the picture with Jessica Simpson
"is classic Tom," said Doug Chambers, a college pal.
"I don't know how he did it, but I can guarantee he
was waiting for her when she got off the
helicopter," Chambers said.
